Many people want to be a nurse but are not sure what the qualifications are or where to start so that they can get an education in order to be a nurse. To become a nurse takes a lot of dedication and a lot of work. You will spend a lot of time studying and in the later part of your education you will get some experience in the field. To become a nurse first you have to complete a set standard education, then pass the state licensing test.

Before you register for classes be sure to check with the state licensing board to make sure that there is nothing on the list that would prevent you from becoming licensed. There are some crimes and other moral issue questions along with a background check that is done to determine if you are even eligible to become a nurse.

Some schools and programs will require nursing applicants to take a test called the Nursing Pre-Admission exam; this test helps to choose the students that will be the most successful in the program because nursing programs often receive many more applications than they have places in the class.

There is a one year program that some people choose to pursue; the LPN or Licensed Practical Nurse; this type of nurse tends to be an assistant to the RN’s in any facility. Basically, an LPN is the bottom to the todum poll in the nursing industry. Most choose this route as a way to get to work quickly and continue their education as they work.

The most common nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) this is someone who has finished two years of nursing school usually through a community college or some other type of educational facility and is licensed. RN’s are the core of the nursing industry and RN programs are the most popular nursing programs in the field of nursing.

Nurses often don’t stop with just their Associate’s Degree and RN license. Many nurses take their education to the next level and complete a Bachelor’s in Nursing. By completing a Bachelor’s in Nursing you open your options to move your career in different directions. Many nurses who hold a bachelor’s degree will be able to move up to management positions and may also choose to work in a particular specialty.

After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing a few will proceed to graduate school so that they can specialize and become a Nurse Anesthetist. This is an important career move and is a hard goal to reach. Those nurses who have reached this level of education and experience are highly respected and well compensated. Nurse Anesthetist have a large amount of responsibility.


To become a nurse first make sure that you meet all the qualifications which can be done with a telephone call to a community college admissions department. Use the services that community colleges offer and you will have minimal problems navigating your way to a career as a nurse.
