The demand for life coaches has gone up, as many people use one to help them in their lives, as they will help you as you go through a particularly difficult period in your life, or if you are making a major decision in your career, or changing careers, or if you have some other major happening in your life. Becoming a life coach may not be as hard as you might think, particularly if you already have a degree in a similar field. If you happen to already have a degree in psychology, social work, education or counseling, you may find it quite easy, in fact, to receive accreditation in this field.
If you do not have a degree in any of the fields mentioned above, then it is good to do a bit of research into accredited training programs. Search the internet and compare prices and programs. If you happen to know a life coach then you should ask them what program they studied with and if they found it to be a good program One important point to keep in mind is that the program you are planning to study with should be accredited by the ICF (International Coaching Federation) if you want to receive certification as a life coach. Not all coaching programs are accredited with the ICF, which is currently the only organization that can give you certification, so it pays to make sure that you choose a program that is.
To become certified in this field you will need to apply to the ICF (International Coaching Federation) to receive certification after you have fulfilled their requirements. Besides studying with an accredited coaching program, there are a few other requirements. You need to have a minimum of paid coaching hours, which means you have to find jobs where the person you are coaching understands that you are not yet certified but you have studied and are working towards certification. You are also going to need a couple of already certified coaches to vouch for you and give you references. It is a good idea to find a few and talk to them, make friends with them and ask them for tips and suggestions on how you can improve in this field. Experienced life coaches have a wealth of information and experience that they can share with you that will help you and those that you coach.
All in all, if you are a ‘people person’ and are looking for a job where you are able to help people and make a positive difference in their lives, then this may very well be just the career for you. A prerequisite to being a good coach is to be genuinely concerned about the person they are talking to and helping them through their problems and times of decision. If this is something that is up your alley then you are likely find this field of work to be very fulfilling and gratifying.
