To hold the job position of video game designer is a pretty cool title. Yet just because someone loves to play video games does not mean they can just start designing games. There are many steps involved to become one and a lot of training is necessary. Although talent and creativeness are key components for this career, an education is essential.
Individuals interested in pursuing video game design as a career need to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design. Some colleges and universities are now even offering a degree strictly in video game design. Neither degree is better than the other, however, a graphic design degree leaves many other options open if game design does not work out. While it may be appealing to attend a two year college and earn a degree quickly, a graduate with a four year degree will have more of an advantage, having more education in this competitive industry. A four year degree almost always offers an internship for that on the job training component, which is more appealing to employers. Many internships and programs will allow the student to create their own video game to show off their skills to potential employers as well as provide a learning experience.
The last step after graduation is finding the perfect job. A great way to do this is to look online for job postings and apply as well as attend career fairs. Career fairs almost serve as a mini interview for employer and employee. The potential employer will ask some questions, and it is good for the employee to have some questions ready. When a potential employee has questions, it shows that they have done research on the company. Make sure to have a solid resume, and many colleges have a career counselor available to assist with this process. Also, have a list of solid references for the employer. If they plan to hire an individual, they will want to call and speak to former teachers, employers, or an internship advisor. There are many reasons why an employer may call for references. They may want to know if the individual can work under pressure, meet deadlines, work out issues or bugs in a program, and general work ethics of the employee. They may also request some sample work, such as a game that has been designed. Grades can only tell an employer so much; real work experience shows if the student can apply what has been learned.
Employers are also looking for a broad range within their video games. It is not only students playing video games anymore, many older generations are now playing games as well, and many companies recognize this and are accommodating to this clientele.
These are some steps to on how to become a game designer. Every person will have their own path, yet it is important to get some training in this field. It is a highly competitive market for this career, so the more education and experience the better.
