Becoming a college football coach can be a rewarding a successful career. Most football coaches have decent wages and some coaches at top schools make millions of dollars a year. Most football coaches were previous football players because it gives them a firsthand experience with the game which is essential to becoming a good coach.

To become a football coach you’ll first and foremost need to love the game of football. You should also have a desire to pass on your experience to others. A good coach should also sincerely care about the success of the team whether they or on or off the field. Team leadership is also an essential quality to have and you’ll need to teach the players not only skill in playing, but also inspire them to success and achieving victory. Most of your time you should be thinking about how to improve you players, you should also invest time in studying your opponents.

Education is important towards becoming a college football coach; most colleges require at least a bachelor’s degree in a relating field such as physical education. Most coaches go beyond that and study additional courses such as sports and exercise science, fitness and nutrition, physiology, and other courses that are helpful to football.

Connections are also important for college coaches, many coaches are hired by a recommendation from an old coach or some other influential person. Schools are always looking for quality coaches so you’ll need to build your name in the sports world so you’ll be able to get good referrals. Don’t always expect to receive a top paying job immediately, initially you’ll probably start off small and then build yourself up as time goes by. If you don’t have a paid job as a coach yet you could volunteer at a local football league, this will help you to gain firsthand experience in coaching and you may also be able to get a recommendation from the head coach afterwards. Volunteers are usually difficult to find so there usually aren’t many requirements for a volunteer assistant coach on most youth leagues so all you’ll need is willingness to spend time with the players.

Once you’ve had experience as a volunteer coach, you may then apply for various college positions. If you don’t feel like you have adequate experience yet, you could also coach at junior high schools or senior high schools, these positions will offer you a fairly impressive resume and you should be able to easily apply for a college coaching job afterwards. Usually a bachelor’s degree in coaching or physical education is required in order to become a high school coach.


Experience will be what builds your careers, it can take years to build up a good amount of experience but once you have a good resume you’ll be able to apply for higher paying jobs. Start off in the lower ranks of coaching and in time you’ll have the necessary qualifications and experience to become a professional college football coach.
