How To Become A Cheerleader

by admin

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a cheerleader you may be surprised at the actual requirements. Cheerleaders are often portrayed as perky girls in cute outfits, but this typical cheerleader image is far from the reality of a real life cheer team which features athletic girls and boys of all shapes and sizes.

Even though a team may have cute outfits to perform their routines in, being part of a cheer team is not all fun and games. Cheerleading is a tough sport which requires a great deal of dedication and athleticism.

Cheerleading coaches are looking for team players that will arrive for cheer practice on time and have a positive attitude. As a cheerleader you must be willing to work hard during practices and be open to criticism in order to improve on your cheers, jumps, stunts, lifts, etc.

Successful cheer teams spend around four to six hours a week practicing their routines and may spend time traveling to compete as well, so you need to have a flexible schedule.

Since all successful cheerleading teams have great team spirit, you must be willing to support your fellow teammates. In order for cheerleaders to work together well they must put aside any differences in opinion and learn to get along.

You can show that you are serious about wanting to become a cheerleader by taking your tryout and practices seriously. Avoid complaining, arguing, or distracting other team members and focus on becoming the best cheerleader you can be.

Cheerleading is a high energy sport and team members are expected to display their enthusiasm while performing at games or competitions. If you have a lot of enthusiasm for cheerleading then makes sure you let it show during your tryout. Show that you are confident, be positive, and smile throughout cheer team tryouts.

Cheerleaders face a high risk of injuries, especially while they are performing potentially dangerous stunts. You need to show your coach that you are capable of being a reliable team member who will work to protect both yourself and others from unnecessary injuries. While you are taking part in difficult cheerleading stunts or maneuvers you must have the ability to focus on your assigned role.

Although you do not have to be able to accomplish difficult gymnastic moves such as hand springs and back tucks, it is helpful to be able to do either cartwheels or somersaults. If you do not know how to do a somersault you can still make the cheerleading team as long as you are willing to learn.

Of course having experience in dance or gymnastics is an asset during your tryout but those who do not have experience still have a great chance of making the cheer team as well. One great way to get ready for a cheer team tryout is to practice stretching exercises to gain flexibility. By becoming highly flexible you will be more likely to successfully learn new cheerleading and gymnastic moves.

You can also work on getting into shape and building stamina by beginning an aerobic exercise regimen. You might even try out a dance class or gymnastics course that will help you with your endurance, flexibility, and co-ordination.

You may be nervous about trying out for the cheerleading team, but you will never know whether or not you are capable unless you give it a try. If you do not make the cheerleading team this year, you can always try out again next season after a bit more practice.
