Becoming a bodyguard usually requires more physical skills and strength of character as opposed to formal training and education. Bodyguards need to be trustworthy and reliable, and able to easily adapt to change. They also have to be able to do their job well even under dangerous conditions, and they need to be physically agile and strong.
Security guards is usually considered to be a low level security job, whereas being a bodyguard is considered a high level security job because they will need to be trained in advanced procedures and also be physically and mentally strong. The essential job of a bodyguard is to protect the lives of influential or famous people, this job involves a lot of commitment as the bodyguard may have to risk their life in order to protect the lives of the individual they are guarding.
Although there is no set standard required for bodyguards, there are several methods which can help you work toward trying to become a one. You’ll need a basic level of education, and high school diploma or GED should be fine. It’s also an advantage if have previous experience working in the military, police force, or other government security agencies. The majority of bodyguards do this so then they already possess most of the skills and training that is need towards becoming a bodyguard.
Physical fitness is another important aspect towards becoming a bodyguard. You should have a strict regime of exercise that you perform often and you’ll probably want to add some weight training as well. Because physical fitness is so important for guarding people, you’ll need to make sure that you remain physically fit and strong all throughout your career.
Although formal training is not usually required for bodyguards, there are some different skills that you must have in order to become one. Self defense is important, as you’ll need to be able to protect your client from potential attackers. Taking a martial arts or other self defense program is essential and you should become an expert at it. There are hundreds of different types of martial arts, and many guards train themselves in more than one area. You should also take training to learn how to handle a fire arm correctly and also learn firearms safety. There are a number of more advanced courses that will also help you with crisis management and prevention such as close protection training courses, weapons disarming courses, and anti-ambush procedures. Emergency courses like CPR and emergency response are also beneficial to your resume.
Once you feel like you have adequate training you should inquire at different security companies and ask about employment opportunities. It’s best to start off in a local position until you have a good resume and lots of references, then you’ll be able to apply at larger companies for higher paying jobs. You may start off small at first, but with perseverance and patience you can build up a rewarding and lucrative career as you receive good referrals enabling you to get high paid job.
